Fire rated downlights are recessed ceiling spotlights that are designed to stop the spread of fire from one floor to the next if a hole has been cut in the ceiling. This can be done with a firehood (a fire proof tent-like device that sits on top of the light fitting), or a purpose made fireproof downlight that has a canister on top to contain fire spread.
